Painter, Calligrapher and Seal Carver

Mr. Foo has devoted his life to Chinese art. As a young man, Mr. Foo was an avid student of painting, calligraphy and seal carving. Over the last 35 years, he has put his knowledge into practice by dedicating his life to the pursuit of his art. He has also given his knowledge back to the community as a teacher of traditional Chinese art.

Over the years, Mr. Foo has developed a very unique style to his art. Although his works hold to tradition, they are also imbued with a tremendous amount of energy and compassion. This allows Mr Foo to push the boundaries of his art. Particularly fascinating are his painted characters which seem to wriggle and tumble across the canvas. His style is immensely unique, and has been collected by art buyers from across the world.

Mr Foo's vast skills and knowledge have taken him all over the world to show his work. This has allowed Mr Foo to have the great fortune being one of the most widely known Chinese artists in Hong Kong.

Mr Foo was born in Canton China in 1948 and moved to Hong Kong as an 8 year old. At the age of 21, be began his studies of calligraphy, painting and seal carving under professor Ting Yin-Yung. Four years later, Mr. Foo graduated with a bachelor of fine arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

In 1979, Mr. Foo began his long standing teaching relationship with the Hong Kong Arts Centre.

Mr. Foo’s list of shows and publications include:

  • 1980: Shown in solo exhibition at the Hong Kong Hotel
  • 1980: Shown in joint exhibition at the Hong Kong Arts Centre
  • 1981: Shown in joint exhibition of works by eighteen members of the Niujun Painters Society
  • 1983: A selection of cursive style calligraphies were chosen for the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biannual Exhibition and are now in the Hong Kong Museum of Art collection
  • 1983: Published “Foo Sai-Heng Seal Engraving” in Hong Kong
  • 1985: Showed a selection of seal engravings at the First China International Calligraphy Exhibition at Hunan Province Museum, China
  • 1987: Published “The Script of the Han Li Qi Style” in Hong Kong
  • 1988: Shown in solo exhibition in Australia
  • 1989 Shown in exhibition in Taiwan
  • 1990 Shown at the Hong Kong Commercial Press
  • 1991 Shown in solo exhibition in Australia
  • 1992 Shown in exhibition at the Hong Kong Arts Centre
  • 1992 Shown in exhibition at the Empress Place Museum, Singapore
  • 1995 Published “Foo Sai-Heng Chinese Calligraphy, Painting and Seal Engraving Selection I” in Hong Kong
  • 1997 Shown in exhibition at the National Museum of Chinese History in Beijing, China
  • 1998 Shown in exhibition in Cambridge, England
  • 1999 Shown in exhibition in Barcelona, Spain
  • 1999 Published “Foo Sai-Heng Chinese Calligraphy, Painting and Seal Engraving Selection II”
